| CRETE
ISLAND |
It is
a ruggedly beautiful island, with fertile coastal plains and resort
towns overshadowed by towering mountains, still snow-capped in early
spring. Crete is a major tourist destination with two international
airports linked by a fine north-coast highway, excellent beaches of
all kinds, great nightlife and some of the best eating out in the
whole of Greece.
There are lovely harbour towns at Rethymno, Chania and Agios Nikolaos,
several ancient Minoan sites, including Knossos, home of the fabled
Minotaur, and the longest gorge in Europe, at Samaria. You can even
visit the beautiful neighbouring island of Santorini, which some believe
is the legendary lost city of Atlantis... But don't let us put off
with too much action; if all you want is to lie on a sun-drenched
beach and spend lazy days doing nothing but relaxing, then Crete has
a wonderful selection for you too. |
